A CGM sensor estimates glucose in interstitial fluid, the fluid between cells. The system converts sensor information into repeated glucose values and displays them over time. A fingerstick meter instead measures glucose in a blood sample at that moment.
From a sensor signal to a graph
| Step | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| Sensing | The implanted sensing element responds to glucose in its local environment. |
| Processing | The device converts and processes the signal using its system-specific method. |
| Display | A receiver or compatible app shows readings and, where supported, trends and alerts. |
| Review | A report brings together recorded values for a defined period. Missing data still matters. |
Why a CGM and fingerstick may differ
Blood and interstitial fluid are different measurement compartments. During rapid glucose changes, interstitial readings may lag; device processing adds another source of timing difference. The ADA 2026 guidance describes this practical limitation.
A 2013 physiological study in eight healthy fasting adults observed mean tracer appearance delays around 5.3–6.2 minutes under its experimental conditions. That is not a fixed delay specification for every sensor, meal, exercise session or person. It does not justify shifting every chart by a universal number of minutes.
When a number raises a question
Follow the exact device instructions for readings that seem inconsistent, warnings or interruptions. A difference alone does not establish that a sensor is defective, and it should not be converted into a home-made numerical correction. For support, record the model, time, displayed warning, app version and relevant device conditions without posting private health records publicly.
This is general educational information. Use the instructions for the exact device and discuss personal glucose results or treatment questions with your healthcare professional.
